Tackling Unseen Poetry

Level: Sec 1 & 2 (IP/IB/O-Levels)

Teacher: Ms Nicole de Silva (Ms D)

The Tackling Unseen Poetry Workshop was designed by Mrs Nora de Silva to equip students with the skills required to approach the Unseen Poetry component in the O-Level, A-Level, and even IB exams.

Unseen Poetry is a critical component of the O-Level English Literature paper, appearing in Paper 1 alongside the Set Text component. Unseen Poetry also appears in the A-Level H1/H2 papers and is taken as the ultimate test of the student's ability to respond critically to a piece of writing that is new to them, through close reading and analysis of the writer's choices of form, structure, language, and other literary devices.

Unseen Poetry as an exam format is introduced to students in Sec 1 & 2 with many students struggling to score in this challenging component despite good scores in their English Language papers, with the Unseen aspect of the paper usually throwing them off and/or deemed as something that "cannot be studied".
